Privacy
This notice explains what Newington Press keeps when you use this site or send us an enquiry, why, and for how long. Newington Press is a trading name of Focal Point International LLC, which is the controller of your information. Write to us at hello@dawnchild.com (an inbox we share with Dawnchild Books) about anything here.
What we keep, and why
- Your enquiry: your name, email address, the service you chose and what you tell us about the book. We use it to reply, to quote and, if you go ahead, to do the work. The lawful basis is taking steps at your request before a contract, and then the contract itself.
- Abuse prevention: a keyed hash of your internet address and the time you wrote, so that we can slow down automated misuse of the form. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the form usable. The hash cannot be read back into your address without our key.
- The site itself: our server and Cloudflare process the technical details of each request (such as your internet address and browser) to deliver and protect the pages. This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and has no advertising trackers.
When an enquiry arrives the studio is told that one has come in; the notice carries no name, email address or details. Please do not send sensitive personal information through the form.
Where it is kept, and who handles it
- Enquiries are stored in our own database on a server we rent from Hetzner Online in Germany.
- Cloudflare, Inc. carries the site’s traffic and protects it; it may process connection data in the United States under its data-processing terms, which include the UK and EU standard contractual clauses.
- Email you send us, and our replies, pass through our email provider.
- The database is copied every night. Copies on the server are kept for thirty days; a further copy is kept on a backup machine we own.
We do not sell your information or share it with anyone else, except where the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We delete an enquiry two years after it arrives, so that we can answer questions about a quote in the meantime. If the enquiry becomes work for you, we keep the records the work and the tax rules need for six years after the job ends. The abuse-prevention hash is deleted after thirty days.
Something we have deleted can survive for a time in a backup copy. We do not use it from there, and would restore it only to recover from a failure, after which we delete it again.
If you choose a voice the family knows
For this service we hold the speaker’s reading, their recorded consent and the synthetic voice made from the reading. The lawful basis is the speaker’s consent, which they can withdraw at any time by writing to hello@dawnchild.com; we then stop and delete the reading and the voice, though copies of an audiobook already sold cannot be recalled. We use the voice only to narrate the book you asked for, never to identify anyone and never for anything else. We delete the reading and the voice when the work is finished unless the speaker asks us in writing to keep them for further work, and we keep the consent record for as long as the audiobook is on sale. If any part of the voice work is done by an outside provider, we name it in your quote and in the consent form before anything is recorded.
Decisions made by software
No decision about you is made by software alone.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, or ask for it in a portable form. Write to hello@dawnchild.com; we acknowledge a request or complaint within two working days and answer within one month. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk, or to the data protection authority where you live.
